HERDSMEN VS FARMERS: Governor Ortom Sets Up Committee To Halt Herdsmen Attack

Benue State Government has set up a committee to work out modalities to forestall the crisis usually caused by the invasion and killing of innocent people by herdsmen in parts of the state. 

Governor Samuel Ortom announced the formation of the committee while declaring open a seminar for stakeholders in the security sector which took place at the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi.

Governor Ortom said similar committees would subsequently be inaugurated by his Security Adviser, Colonel Edwin Jando at the local government and ward levels, stressing the determination of his administration to prevent a repeat of the loss of lives and property as a result of the crisis.
According to him, chairmen of the local governments would head the committees at that level while the divisional police officers, other security officials, Miyetti Allah chairmen and the Civilian JTF leaders in the local governments would be members.
He said the committees will be expected to embark on adequate sensitisation of farmers and cattle rearers to enable them embrace ranching as a veritable solution for the recurrent crisis. 
The Governor emphasized the resolve of his administration to combat crime, saying that the state is already winning the war against hoodlums who are now on the run. 
Representative of the Acting Tor Tiv, Chief Sule Abenga, described the seminar as timely as it would help in curbing the spilling of innocent blood. 
Also speaking, the representative of Och’Idoma, Chief John Anteyi, appealed to the committee to commence documentation of resident Fulanis in the state and urged those at the local level to provide the committee with useful information about their visitors.
Coordinator of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria in the State, Alhaji Gallus Gololo, promised on behalf of members to cooperate with the Ortom administration to ensure that there is cordial working relationship between them and the government.
