PHOTO: In Benue, University Graduate Kills Own Mother
A graduate of the University of Jos, Plateau State, Godwin Orinya, who lives at Ufia Street in Otukpo, Benue State has killed his mother, Saturday PUNCH has learnt.
Before the incident, Orinya, a native of Ado Local Government Area of the state, was said to have started acting strangely, prompting his family to commit him to a local mental health care centre. A member of the family, who pleaded anonymity, said that on Monday, November 21, he beat his mother to death at the facility where he was receiving treatment at Agboke, Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State. The centre is said to be run by a man who uses herbal medicine as treatment for mental illnesses. On the day of the incident, the man had reportedly gone out to get some herbs when Orinya pounced on his mother who was with him and beat her to death. He was said to have escaped from the centre afterwards. Spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, Mr. Moses Yamu, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent over the phone on Thursday, said efforts were still ongoing to apprehend the young man who is at large before he could do harm to members of the public.
