As the Tiv traditional institution prepares to elect a new paramount ruler this week, Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has charge the kingmakers to carry out their responsibility faithfully as he will not hesitate in rejecting any unfair selection. Governor Ortom made this remark while answering questions from journalists earlier in the week at the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi. The Governor said there was no controversy as to where the next Tor Tiv will emerge from saying the kingmakers who are abreast with history know where the next monarch should come from. His words: ” I have told them that as governor I have the right to accept any selection that is done fairly and transparently and also done in consonance with the law we have signed but where it is done contrary to that, I also reserve the right to reject it. “So we are advocating that the whole thing should be done by consensus because they know where the various positions should go because they know the history.” He therefore cautioned the kingmakers against receiving bribes from candidates to influence the process. “And I’ve warned the chiefs that if for any reason they take bribe in order to select a new Tor Tiv they will not eat the money because they will have to contend with God and not man. “Because it would have been me that would do the imposition but we have left the job to the royal fathers of the land so that it will be done in a free and fair atmosphere in line with the dictates of God who makes a king.” Governor Ortom advocated. The people of Shitile of Ipusu are believed to be traditionally next in line for the Tor Tiv stool however the Kwande people are pushing to also be considered. Culled from Benue.info
